TAMIS removes tumors faster than traditional surgeries and with less pain during recovery and a quicker return to normal activity. The procedure is completed in about an hour, and the patient is often discharged from the hospital within 24 […] Undergoing surgery for removal of polyps or tumors needn’t be painful and inconvenient if you’re a suitable candidate for transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS). Karen Zaghiyan, MD, FACS, FASCRS, is a double board-certified colorectal surgeon providing exceptional services, including advanced forms of surgery such as TAMIS, at her practice in Los Angeles, California. 2016-06-28 Robotic transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) may be an option for rectum‐preserving excision of neoplasms. Recent cadaveric studies showed improved vision, control and manoeuvrability compared with use of laparoscopic instruments. This study reports the clinical application. 2014-10-01 Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery February 2016 , Volume 20, Issue 2 , pp 463–469 | Cite as Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery: State of the Art Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), since the first report by Atallah et al,4 has progressively gained popularity for the treatment of mid and high rectal lesions, offering a feasible alternative to TEA, TEM, and endo-scopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in early rectal cancer, BACKGROUND: Since its inception in 2009, transanal minimally invasive surgery has been used increasingly in the United States and internationally as an alternative to local excision and transanal endoscopic microsurgery for local excision of neoplasms in the distal and mid rectum.
Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) has evolved as an oncologically safe yet cost-effective platform for local excision of rectal tumors using traditional laparoscopic instruments. This review highlights the recent advances and current role of TAMIS in the treatment of rectal cancer.

Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) is a technique that was originally devised as a hybrid between Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM) and single-site laparoscopy for resection of rectal lesions. It was developed out of the need for a practical alternative to TEM that was both affordable and Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) is performed to resect benign and malignant lesions in the distal to proximal rectum using transanal access platforms and standard laparoscopic instrumentation.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of TAMIS for resection of rectal malignant tumors. In 2009, at the height of popularity of single-incision laparoscopy, an alternate transanal endoscopic setup using single-incision laparoscopic disposable transanal ports was reported, which was called transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) [20, 21]. Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) for rectal cancer is gaining interest, with the objective of maximum sparing for physiological functions. Although this approach may be considered appropriate for treating stage T1m tumors, a large proportion of T1sm and T2 tumors could well benefit from this.
